bitterroot River important bird areaMontana Audubon and the Bitterroot Audubon Chapter have teamed up to better understand and protect the Bitterroot River from just south of Lolo to just north of Hamilton! This cottonwood bottomland and riparian habitat is great for Lewis' Woodpecker, Red-naped Sapsuckers, Willow Flycatchers, and many more bird species. In fact the diversity of breeding birds along this river is another reason for its inclusion in the IBA program. 2012. At our latest annual festival, the Bitterroot Audubon Chapter was given Montana Audubon's "2010 Special Achievement Award" for their service and efforts to conserve birds and other wildlife in this IBA. August 2010. The Ravalli Republic wrote a great feature article on the Chapter's efforts and award: Birds of A Feather >> They are conducting bird surveys, distributing a brochure and bird list to help communicate with the over 1,100 landowners within the IBA, meeting with landowners to discuss the importance of this area for birds and forming partnerships to make protection of the Bitterroot River IBA a reality.
